Recent paintings from Marla Gamble's Minnesota portfolio

I am a painter: oil, acrylic and watercolor. Landscapes, skies, Aurora Borealis and dawn over the Mississippi River. But my sketching medium is watercolor. It travels with me, visits 'up north', goes to the lake and loves my friends' wonderful gardens.

You can still see everything: Saint Paul Virtual Art Crawl at LLAC!

  • Lowertown Lofts Artist Cooperative (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Even though the weekend of the Saint Paul Virtual Art Crawl is over, you can still watch ALL the interviews and special features on our Blog page, forever!

Thank you, everyone, who participated and all who viewed our Facebook interviews and special posts!

You’re invited! Lowertown Lofts Artist Cooperative is opening its virtual doors to the public during the Saint Paul Virtual Art Crawl. See the distinct art – created in a wide variety of media – that the LLAC artists have been working on while sheltering in place. We’ll be live-streaming and posting updates regularly throughout the three days.

For more than 30 years artists have been working and living in these studios, responding to life’s challenges by making art. In fact, the co-op itself began in response to a difficult situation: lack of affordable studios. Urban redevelopment had forced over 100 artist out of their downtown studios after bringing vitality to an otherwise moribund area.

Art sustains. Help sustain artists by engaging with our work and, if you’re able, making a purchase.

All online events during our virtual Art Crawl will be announced on this Events page and all events, videos and special features will be posted as available on our Blog page, so you can watch them whenever you want. You can also visit each of our resident artists’ pages on this site to see more work and learn more about them.

This special online event is in coordination with the Saint Paul Virtual Art Crawl.

My Mighty Journey is the story of St. Anthony Falls, the only major waterfall on the Mississippi River, and the changes it witnessed over twelve thousand years. Written by John Coy and illustrated by LLAC co-op member/owner  Gaylord Schanilec, the narrative is written from the perspective of the falls. It recounts the people who lived nearby, the ways they lived, and how the area around the waterfall changed drastically over the past two centuries. Selected illustrations from My Mighty Journey will be on exhibit as well selections from Schanilec’s two most recent artist’s books: A Little Book of Birds and A Little Book of Flowers.

Co-op member/owner Justin Terlecki’s colorful depictions of everyday life take the viewer on an intimate tour of the ordinary. Pulling from quiet observation, public spectacle and human relationships, Terlecki’s scenes range from local celebrations and family dynamics to snapshots of the city. As the artist explains, “Travel and my immediate surrounding inspire me to explore the atmosphere and mood of specific places in time. I enjoy the process of building immersive compositions with details of everyday life using the perspective of multiple vantage points and the combination of both the real and the imagined.”
